It is characterized by keeping regular sea connection in a particular area according to a sailing list, running a line according to conditions known in advance for a freight charge the amount of which is set by a tariff. Line transport is used mainly for piece goods transport, carried conventionally or in containers. The freight charge in sea line transport represents a reward for the transportation of a consignment from the port of loading to the port of destination. The freight charge in sea line transport is calculated for a unit of weight or load dimensionality or from the value of goods. In the tariffs there is often reserved option, the choice of a ship operator, whether the freight charge will be calculated according to the weight or load dimensionality with the abbreviation W/M.
The freight charge rates in line transport include activities connected with the loading and discharge of goods, including its storage on the ship which is known as liner terms or berth terms. Surcharges are often charged to the basic freight charge set in the tariff that are connected with the occurrence of an extraordinary situation in a port, with circumstances influencing sea transport or with a special kind of goods such as e.g. the congestion surcharge, the winter surcharge, the bunker adjustment factor or the currency adjustment factor.
It is necessary to book stowage space on the expected departure of a line vessel in advance. The booking of stowage space means that stowage space for the transport of particular cargo is provided on a particular departure of a line vessel from the port of loading to the port of destination under the contracted conditions concerning the amount of the freight charge and the mode of payment. A contracted booking of the stowage space is confirmed by the Booking Note.
Unlike the line transport the tramp transport is run without a particular transport area, without a sailing list set in advance and the freight charge is contracted from case to case according to the market situation. Tramp transport is used mainly for bulk cargo transport such as corn, coal, ores, phosphates, pyrites, iron, ferrous scrap, lumber, artificial fertilizers, sugar, cement etc., particularly in cases of full-ship cargoes.
The freight terms in the tramp transport are given in a contract that is known as “Charter Party”, abbr. C/P and its contracting parties are:
Unlike the line transport the freight charge is not set by tariffs and does not include the loading and discharge of a vessel and the storage of goods on a ship.
